Winter Storm Safety Checklist 3/13/2017

Know your Winter Storm terminology so you can gauge your plans and preparations before a winter event.  Here is some key winter storm terminology you may hear on the news or on the radio:

Winter storm outlook: The potential forecast

Winter storm conditions are possible within the next 2-5 days. This is the best time to get a shovel, bread, and eggs if necessary

Winter Weather Advisory: Inconvenient but not life threatening

Winter conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences and may be hazardous. When caution is used, these situations should not be life threatening.

If a winter advisory is in effect, consider preparing for your morning commute by waking up early to clear car and driveway and get gas the night before it happens.

Winter storm watch: 36-48 hour notice of potential storm

Winter storm conditions are possible within the next 36-48 hours. People in a watch area should review their winter storm plans and stay informed about weather conditions. If you haven’t prepared for the storm, it’s time to get to the grocery store to buy shovels, bread, eggs and a water supply.  Get Generator ready if available.

Winter storm warning: Storm is beginning or will begin in 24 hours

Life threatening sever winter conditions have begun or will begin within 24 hours. People in a warning area should take precautions immediately.

Winter weather is never convenient and can be unsafe but being prepared can help homeowners protect their home and make life easier when these weather events happen.
