How common is Stachybotrys Chartarum (black mold) in Perry Hall?

2/13/2017 (Permalink)

Stachybotrys Chartarum (sometimes referred to as "black mold") is less common than other species of mold, however, it is not rare.

About Stachybotrys:

Stachybotrys is greenish-black in color, and can grow on material with a high cellulose and low nitrogen content such as:

  • fiberboard

  • gypsum board
  • paper
  • dust
  • lint
  • wall paper

Is Stachybotrys dangerous?

Stachybotrys is classified as Hazard Class A which means it is highly dangerous and requires immediate attention.

Stachybotrys is a Hydrophillic mold -meaning it requires a high water activity to exist so constant moisture is required for its growth. Stachybotrys is more likely to occur when there is moisture from water damage, excessive humidity, water leaks, condensation, water infiltration or flooding present. If you experienced a flood and now see mold you need to get the mold and water cleaned up immediately.

Is all black mold stachybotrys?

If you have black colored mold it does not mean it is stachybotrys - there are over 36,000 mold types in a variety of hues ranging from black, white, green, to orange and even blue. In fact depending on the infestation, there could be multiple types of mold present, requiring multiple different protocols for clean up - this can only be done by an environmental hygienist.
