Ice Maker Water Damage: a Silent Threat to your Perry Hall Home

11/8/2021 (Permalink)

Ice maker leaks are common and often go unnoticed. These slow leaks damage both the wall, flooring, and lower levels of homes which can lead to decay. You may have an ice maker but no signs of leaks. Keep on reading, we’re going to give you some advice on how to detect leaks and how to prevent them from happening.

Why Ice makers cause significant damage

When an ice maker is installed, an “ice maker valve," a small metal saddle is secured to a cold water pipe near the refrigerator, with a small clear plastic pipe for the water to feed into the ice maker. Pinholes form in the tubing go unnoticed during installation and remain unnoticed for years, hidden behind the refrigerator and will eventually lead to a serious water damage and create the perfect environment for mold to grow.

Over a long period of time, hundreds of gallons of water seeping from the ice maker line tubing can lead to serious structural decay and damage to the wall and floor systems around the refrigerator in your kitchen. It can take weeks for the water damage to become exposed as the water is trapped in your counters and between your walls.

If you own a refrigerator with an ice maker, periodically check behind the fridge for evidence of a leak, water damage or mold or keep an eye on your water bill for unexplainable increase in water use.
